The Temple Israel Fellowship is off to an amazing start! Our first week was filled with a variety of events to get us oriented with Memphis and Temple, and for us to get to know each other.
The program began last Saturday, June 1, when we all moved into the South Bluffs apartments, an awesome downtown location just a short walk to the weekly farmer’s market and to the great bars and restaurants on South Main Street. After moving in and exploring the beautiful complex, which includes two swimming pools, a tennis court and a gym, we had our first dinner as a group at Aldo’s on Main St. It was so delicious and a great way for us to get to know each other!
The next day we had our orientation at Temple Israel where we did everything from taking a tour of the synagogue to talking about fun activities to do in Memphis. After lunch, we were told there was a surprise waiting for us downtown and to meet in the lobby of the Peabody. This surprise turned out to be one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in Memphis – a Segway tour of downtown! After about an hour of learning how to ride the Segway, we were off on an amazing tour of downtown. We rolled all over – Beale St., out front of the FedEx Forum, down South Main, and along the river before heading back to the Peabody. It was the perfect way to get to know our new neighborhood!
Monday marked the start of our internships in various fields all over Memphis. Our first full work week ended with great tours of the Stax and the Civil Rights Museums, led by Rabbi Greenstein. On Friday night, we enjoyed a very nice Shabbat service and dinner at the Greenstein’s house, where we had the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of the executive board of Temple.
Needless to say, the first week of the Fellowship has been nothing short of fun, interesting and all around awesome. I can’t wait for the next 9 weeks!
