04 Jul Week 3, June 16 – June 23
Summer’s here and the TI fellows are lucky enough to experience Memphis in all of its hot and humid glory. Fortunately, none of us are paying for the AC at the apartments, so crank those suckers down to 40, grab a brew (those of us of age), and read the week 3 TI Fellowship Blog.
Week 3 began on an altruistic note as the fellows volunteered at the Memphis Union Mission Soup Kitchen Sunday morning. The mission, which is completely privately funded, provides food, shelter, and general aid to men in need. The fellows helped out by serving lunch to the men living at the shelter. Though many of these men had fallen on hard times, it was nice to see how thankful so many of them were for our help.
The following Tuesday the fellows traveled to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital for an event sponsored by the New Memphis Institute: “Memphis 101; A Crash Course on the City and Its History.” The event featured a slide show presentation that discussed everything and anything about the city of Memphis. Though a bit lengthy, even those of us who grew up in Memphis walked away from the event with a greater appreciation for the city, once named the “quietest, safest, and cleanest city in the nation.”
Overall it was another great week for the fellows!
