16 Jun Week 2, June 9 – June 16
Where should I begin? Hillary did a great job painting a picture of the WONDERFUL summer Temple Israel has set up for us—fabulous support, amazing apartments, enriching internships and a huge deal of opportunities. In this blog, I will focus on the support and opportunities.
On Saturday night, we all convened at the ever-chic Mollie Fontaine’s, a hip restaurant founded in an old Victorian-style home. We enjoyed plenty of good food and drink and of course, great conversation. We spoke with the Fellowship’s founders about what keeps them in Memphis, and what their vision is for us this summer.
Our next group stop was Felicia Suzanne’s on Tuesday evening for the New Memphis Institute’s Summer Experience Kick-off. Summer Experience is a program designed specifically for collegiate and recent grads who are interning/working in Memphis for the summer. It combines a mix of social activity as well as professional development, all speaking to the non-profit’s mission of teaching people about the city of Memphis and promoting a love for the city. Although I could not attend this event, my fellow fellows (haha) told me it was “delicious, fantastic, and delicious” and that they are looking forward to future NMI Summer Experience events!
And to conclude our second week of interning, we all came together for our first Fellows Shabbat. Put together by Shayna, Sarah and Mitch, we all enjoyed a BBQ at the South Bluffs. We shared Shabbat traditions we grew up with, and I was surprised to hear about how many Memphians have weekly extended family Shabbats (we are talking 30 people in some cases)! While I of course had my fair share of Shabbat dinners growing up, it was never written in stone, and never did the entire family come together. This speaks to the strong commitment, and success, to preserve the Jewish community in Memphis.
I can’t help but smile when I think about how strong the Jewish community is in Memphis, and how fortunate I am to be part of it this summer. Memphians — be proud of what you have set up!
